You've decided to build a custom mobile app and you're considering a Brazilian nearshore agency. Smart choice, but only if you go in with the right expectations. Here's what the process actually looks like.

Phase 1: Discovery (2–4 weeks)

A good Brazilian agency will not start writing code on week one. The first phase is discovery: understanding your business, your users, your competitive landscape, and your success metrics. Expect meetings, workshops, and a lot of questions. This phase is where good agencies earn their fee, bad ones skip it entirely.

Output: a product definition document with scope, user flows, feature list, technical stack recommendation, and a realistic timeline and budget.

Phase 2: Design (2–4 weeks)

UI/UX design before development. You'll review wireframes (black-and-white layouts showing structure), then high-fidelity mockups (pixel-perfect screens with your branding). Expect 2–3 rounds of revision. Get the design right before code starts, changes in design are cheap; changes in code are expensive.

Phase 3: Development (8–20 weeks, depending on scope)

Development happens in 2-week sprints. At the end of each sprint, you receive a working build to test on your device. You provide feedback, the team addresses it in the next sprint. Typical questions you'll be asked: "Does this flow feel right?" "Is this the behavior you expected?" "Should we add X or skip it for MVP?"

Phase 4: QA and testing (2–3 weeks)

Before App Store and Google Play submission, the app goes through structured QA, both automated tests and manual testing on multiple real devices. Regression testing covers all previously approved features. Expect a final round of bug fixes before this phase closes.

Phase 5: App store submission (1–2 weeks)

Apple's App Store review takes 1–3 business days (and can be rejected for policy reasons). Google Play is faster. Your agency should handle the submission process, including writing store listings and screenshots. First-time apps are more likely to face review delays.

Phase 6: Post-launch (ongoing)

The real work starts at launch. Monitor crash reports, user feedback, and performance metrics. Plan a maintenance retainer with your agency, at minimum for critical bug fixes and OS compatibility updates.

What to prepare before you start

  • Apple Developer account ($99/year) and/or Google Play account ($25 one-time)
  • Brand assets (logo, colors, fonts, guidelines)
  • A clear definition of your core user journey
  • Any existing APIs or backend systems the app needs to connect to
  • A designated point of contact on your team to review builds and provide feedback

Conclusion

Working with a Brazilian nearshore agency on a mobile app is an excellent arrangement when both sides are organized and communicate well. Follow this guide and you'll be prepared for every phase, and avoid the surprises that trip up most first-time clients.
